Long Is This Road
Everyone has a road to travel...
A thin veil of cloudy fog clings tightly to the windshield
Evaporating slowly
I watch intently as it recedes along the glass slowly clearing my once obstructed view
I am on a journey.
I am writing a story with each mile traveled and I still have such a long way to go
I travel alone
Not by choice
Not by my design
I take solace in the company of music
I drive
I listen to my soundtrack move throughout the vehicle
Dancing in and out of my head
Conjuring new and sometimes forgotten feelings with each new song
I am grateful for this gift, this constant passenger as I move through long stretches of darkness on my lonely journey
I have had traveling companions before
Picked up along the way and dropped off when it became clear that we'd gone as far as we can go together
I've met angels and I've met dragons and discovered the two are often difficult to differentiate until it's too late.
I press on along this long and winding road
Through days filled with sunlight and the laughter of children to nights racked with lightning storms
The twisted bolts of electric fury crashing onto the pavement below my wheels
They narrowly miss the fuel tank upon which my journey relies
The music continues uninterrupted
I keep driving
Each new stop along the way conjuring emotions within
I feel them begging to be released in a tidal wave of a thirst for knowledge that cannot be contained
I have felt the might of love's kiss and the sting of the knife she wields behind her back
I have felt the warm rush of joy rise up from my stomach to my brain
I have also felt sorrows that have broken every inch of my heart to pieces
Regardless of what I experience
Good or bad
Or whom I encounter
Saint or serpent
My story continues and this road goes on
We all must see our destiny through
A new song comes on over the radio and I can see someone new waiting for a ride in the distance
